A contagious infection transmitted from dogs to humans has been discovered

The disease, called canine brucellosis, was detected in a dog breeding facility in the USA. The disease can be transmitted to humans through the body fluids of dogs.

In the statement made by the Iowa State Veterinary in the USA, it was stated that more than one case of canine brucellosis was seen and this disease can be transmitted from dogs to humans or other animals. The disease emerged at a commercial dog breeding center in Marion County, Iowa.

“Avoid contact with the body fluids of dogs”

Animals at the facility have been quarantined and dogs are being tested one by one. Although the hazard ratio for dog owners is low, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Soil Management said in a statement that dog breeders, veterinarians and people who come into contact with dogs’ blood, tissues and bodily fluids while dogs give birth are at higher risk and should see a doctor. It has been stated that people who have recently bought new dogs from the Marion region should contact their veterinarian.

In the fact sheet published by Iowa State University, it was stated that people assisting in the birth of dogs and handling newborn dogs should wear protective masks and gloves. It was also stated that hands should always be washed after touching all animals.

Shows flu-like effects in humans

Transmission of canine brucellosis to humans is rare. It requires close contact with the infected dog. If the disease is transmitted to humans, flu-like effects occur. Those who have the disease have high fever, back pain and joint pain. Rarely, the nervous system, eyes or heart may also be affected in some people.

All 32 dogs purchased from a dog breeder at an auction in Iowa are currently under quarantine and are undergoing testing. Stating that no results have been obtained from the tests yet, the authorities announced that they have closed the shelter building for the next 30 days.
